What is the DAX?

The DAX is an index or a group of the 30 most powerful stocks listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange in Germany. The DAX is also referred to as the Deutscher Aktien Index and was incorporated on the 30th of December 1987. However, the foundation date of the DAX is the 1st of July 1988.

In terms of the number of companies that form a part of this elite group, it is only comparable to the Dow Jones which is an index of the New York Stock Exchange, which is also made up of the 30 most valuable companies in terms of the market realisation.

An interesting fact about the DAX is that it started at a base level of 1000 points and it is trading today around 9700 points. This signifies an increase of almost 900%. Another interesting fact is that the DAX30, along with its sister indices, forms the 10th largest stock exchange in the world (The Frankfurt stock exchange).

The market capital of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange today stands at approximately $1.5 trillion and the DAX30 value is 598 billion Euros ($809 billion). This means that the DAX30 contributes to approximately 60% of the market capital of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.
